Life Principle - advice by Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah)

One of my teachers shared the following, may Allah always bless her and her family. Aameen. I was going through one of those tough days and found the message very uplifting and inspiring that I had to put it in a post so I will not lose it. Hope others can benefit from it too إن شاء الله‎‎

This is one of the most beautiful and amazing advice by the great scholar Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah):

A friend will not (literally) share your struggles, and a loved one cannot physically take away your pain, and a close one will not stay up the night on your behalf. So look after yourself, protect yourself, nurture yourself, and don't give life's events more than what they are really worth. Know for certain that when you break no one will heal you except you, and when you are defeated no one will give you victory except your determination. Your ability to stand up again and carry on is your responsibility. Do not look for your self-worth in the eyes of people; look for your worth from within your conscious. If your conscience is at peace then you will ascend high and if you truly know yourself then what is said about you won't harm you.

Do not carry the worries of this life because this is for Allah. And do not carry the worries of sustenance because it is from Allah. And do not carry the anxiety for the future because it is in the Hands of Allah.

Carry one thing: How to Please Allah. Because if you please Him, He pleases you, fulfills you and enriches you.

Do not weep for a life that made your heart weep. Just say, "Oh Allah compensate me with good in this life and the hereafter."

Sadness departs with a Sajdah. Happiness comes with a sincere Du'a. Allah does not forget the good you do. Nor does he forget the good you did to others and the pain you relieved them from. Nor will He forget the eye which was about to cry but you made it laugh.

Live your life with this principle:

Be good even if you don't receive good, not because of others' sake but because Allah loves those who do good.

Updated 5/16/2022 - additional advice shared by a family member

Allah took two things out of my hands. The past and the future. The scars, mistakes, regrets, choices, and failures of the past cannot be undone. The future, as much as I like to think I have a plan for, is entirely out of my hands.

But Allah gave me the gift AND the responsibility of the present. So how do I make the most of it?

I cannot afford to let my mind waste the present by dwelling on the hurtful past or the worrisome future. You and I have wasted so much of our precious moments doing that and it has brought us nothing but more of the same.

I must use the past and future to my advantage. The past is nothing more than lessons learned. What the Quran calls عبرة. The future belongs to Him, so I leave it to Him with prayer and give the today He bestowed upon me my best effort. There is plenty of time for looking back at the past and worrying about the future in our graves.

More on the past and future soon إن شاء الله
